Local Councils failing to spend full allocations of traveller accommodations budgets

A Traveller support group is criticizing Sligo County Council for not spending all of the budget it was allocated for traveller accommodation last year.

According to figures obtained by Sinn Fein Deputy Eoin O’ Broin there was an almost 50% underspend nationally of the Traveller accommodation budget in 2018.

Sligo County Council drew down 282 thousand euro from an available allocation of over 1 million euro.

In Leitrim almost 55 thousand euro was spent out of a budget of almost €160 thousand euro.

While in Donegal almost 53 thousand euro was spend from it’s budget of €122 thousand.

Ten local authorities spent nothing at all on Traveller accommodation including Mayo, Galway city, Longford and Westmeath.

Spokesperson for the Sligo Traveller Support Group Jamie Murphy says this is not acceptable.
