Gurteen residents pledge to continue fight to save post office

A South Sligo community is vowing that even if their post office is closed as planned tomorrow (Thursday), they will continue the fight to keep the service in their village.

An Post is insisting that Gurteen Post Office will be closed from the end of business tomorrow.

Speaking to Ocean FM News during his visit to Sligo earlier this week, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the decision was not one for the government to make but he promised to take up the issue with the CEO of An Post.

However, people in Gurteen have not heard anything since to lead them to believe the closure will not go ahead, despite having got two reprieves in the past.

Meanwhile, the community has set up a workshop across the street from the post office to help customers concerned about the closure.

But Gurteen businessman and campaigner Damian Tansey says the determination of the local community should not be underestimated.
