Drennan’s Injury-time goal sinks Sligo Rovers

An injury-time header by Mikey Drennan denied Sligo Rovers a share of the spoils in their opening home league game of the new SSE Aitricity League Premier Division season at the Showgrounds on Friday night.

Drennan struck for the winner against his old club in the dying moments to give Pat’s a 1-0 win – and make it two wins out of two for the Inchicore club.

It was cruel luck on Liam Buckley’s side who had battled hard throughout the 90 minutes in front of a bumper home crowd of 3,314 after having lost defender Johnny Dunleavy to injury early on in the game.

Recent signing Ronan Coughlan made his first start for Rovers – and impressed.

Rovers will have the chance to regroup soon. They welcome Johnny Caulfield’s Cork City to the Showgrounds this Monday night (Feb 25th).

Rovers team: Ed McGinty, Johnny Dunleavy (Lewis Banks, 22), Dante Leverock, John Mahon, Regan Donelon, Kyle Callan McFadden, Jack Keaney, Romeo Parkes, Daryl Fordyce, Kris Twardek, Ronan Coughlan.

Meanwhile, Finn Harps collected their first point of the new season in Ballybofey by holding champions Dundalk to a 1-1 draw. Keith Cowan gave Harps a first-half lead but Dundalk captain Brian Gartland equalised for Dundalk who have started the defence of their league title with two draws.

Referee Robert Rogers and security staff had to separate  the two camps after the final whistle as tempers flared with an on-field row involving players and staff from both teams.
