British tariffs could be disastrous for Irish beef industry

During the week we learned the alarming news of the tariff proposals that were presented to the UK cabinet at a special meeting.

The impact of these tariffs could have very serious implications for the Irish beef sector in the event of a no deal Brexit.

The trade tariffs that would be imposed on Irish by the British government in addition to a tariff-free quota will also apply to Ireland’s main competitors, such as Brazil and Argentina, and could destroy the industry in the north west in particular.

Phelim O’Neill is a Markets Specialist with the Irish Farmers Journal; he says the latest moves by the UK government could also have disastrous consequences for north west  West farmers.
