Sligo Rovers draw with Champions Dundalk

Sligo Rovers began the new SSE Airtricity League Premier Division season on Friday night with a spirited 1-1 draw against Dundalk at Oriel Park.

Jack Keaney’s 43rd minute free-kick gave Rovers an unlikely first-half lead – after goalkeeper Ed McGinty had saved a Pat Hoban penalty earlier in the half. McGinty produced a fine display over the 90 minutes, deservedly earning the Man of the Match award.

Dundalk, going for their fourth league title in five seasons, enjoyed the bulk of the possession and the chances and drew level when new signing Sean Murray fired to the Rovers net in the 49th minute.

The home side pressed hard for a winner but Rovers stood firm to earn a share of the spoils.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Ollie Horgan’s Finn Harps at Dalymount Park as they lost 1-0 to Bohemians. Harps will welcome Dundalk to Finn Park next Friday night.

Sligo Rovers host St Patrick’s Athletic in their first home league game of the new season next Friday night at the Showgrounds. Kick-off: 7:45pm.
