Gurteen Post Office Campaign Group issue Valentine’s post card

A group campaigning to save their local post office in South Sligo has issued post cards to coincide with Valentine’s Day in an effort to highlight their campaign.

An Post announced Gurteen Post Office will close at the end of the month.

Local people say they were given false hope that the post office would remain open, as the deadline for closure had been extended twice.

The Save Gurteen Post Office Group has now disturbed the post cards with the message ‘Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, We will save our Post Office, With Help from you! ‘

Group member, Gerard Sherlock explains why they sent out the postcards.

Campaigner, Damian Tansey, says the closure will have a devastating impact on business in the area.

Meanwhile a spokesperson from An Post says the decision to close Gurteen Post Office is not one it wanted to make, but it was necessary for the sustainability of other post offices in the area.

They say they have examined reports given to them by the local campaign group into the population quota needed to keep the post office in operation which is 500.

However they say they have to base their decision on the latest census information which show the population is less than that figure.

Group member Adrian Tansey says they will continue to fight the decision and are due to hold a public meeting again on Sunday evening.
