An Post says the decision to close the Gurteen Post Office is not one it wanted to make, but it was necessary for the sustainability of other post offices in the area.
The post office in the South Sligo village will now close its doors on February 28th.
Local people say they were given false hope the post office would remain open, as the deadline for closure had been extended twice.
The plan to close the post office had been met with fierce resistance from the community which had a strong local campaign to retain the service.
Public Affairs Manager with An Post Angus Laverty says customers will be transferred to post offices nearby.
Mr Laverty added while they have examined reports given to them by the local campaign group into the population quota needed to keep the post office in operation, they have to base their decision on the latest census information.
