FARMING: Minister launches new beef scheme

The Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed launched a new €20m scheme called Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot, or BEEP for short.

BEEP will target the weaning efficiency of suckler cows and calves – measuring the live weight of the calf at weaning as a percentage of the cow’s live weight.

The scheme was announced in Budget 2019 as part of the 78 million euro Brexit package for the agri-food industry.

The aim of the scheme for suckler farmers is to improving the economic and environmental efficiency of beef production.

Ocean FM’s Therese Madden spoke to Minister Michael Creed to discuss how this new scheme will help farmers.
