Late Down goal breaks Sligo hearts in Collooney

A late goal from Down’s former AFL footballer Caolan Mooney in the 71st minute consigned Sligo to a second successive defeat in the Allianz Football League at Connolly Park in Collooney on Sunday.

Mooney struck late in the match to earn the Mourne County their first points in Division 3.

It was cruel luck on Sligo matched Down all the way with Pat Hughes prominent in both halves. He contributed 1-2 but was shown a red card in the closing quarter of the game for a high challenge.

The result leaves Sligo as the only team in Division 3 without any points to date. Paul Taylor’s side travel to O’Moore Park in Portlaoise to play Laois next Sunday.
