Over 3000 nurses and midwives across the north west region are to go on strike this morning.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation members will join the picket line outside Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals from 8am.

Patients are urged to avoid going to emergency departments, unless absolutely necessary, and to expect increased delays in admission.

This is the first in a series of 24 hour strikes planned by the IMNO in a the row over pay and conditions.

INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Noel Treanor, who is on the picket line outside Sligo University Hospital this morning, says nurses will only be carrying out what he described as ‘life preserving care’.
