Wins for Leitrim & Donegal, Sligo lose in Carlow



Leitrim gaelic footballers laid down an early marker on the opening weekend of the 2019 Allianz Football League Division 4 on Sunday with an impressive 3-15 to 0-11 against Wexford in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The impressive Ryan O’Rourke scored two goals inside a minute early in the second-half to send Leitirim on their way to a handsome victory. The Fenagh St Caillin’s clubman finished the afternoon with a personal tally of 2-7. Leitrim go to Aughrim next Sunday to play Wicklow in round two of the league. Leitrim manager Terry Hyland gave this reaction to the win over Wexford:

 

Declan Bonner’s Donegal made a winning start to their Division 2 campaign – but they were pushed all the way by Clare in Ennis before running out victors on a final scoreline of 0-16 to 0-13. Bundoran’s Jamie Brennan spoke with Paddy McGill after the game:

 

In Division 3 – Sligo’s opening game away to Carlow did not go well. Paul Taylor’s side managed just one score from play in a match which saw Daragh Cummins red-carded in the second-half as they slipped to a 1-11 to 0-6 defeat. Sligo host Down in Connolly Park, Collooney, next Sunday at 2pm.

The opening weekend of the national hurling league saw Sligo make a winning start to Division 3B at Kent Park with a narrow 2-14 to 1-16 win over Fermanagh. Leitrim lost to Cavan by a point in Ballyconnell (2-9 to 1-11) and there was disappointment for Nicky Rackard cup champions Donegal in Division 2B as they were beaten by Kildare in Kilkenny on a final scoreline of 2-16 to 1-13.
