Commission investigating mother and baby homes in Donegal extended

A commission of investigation, which is examining two institutions in Donegal, has been extended.

The substantial report into people buried at mother and baby homes will now be delivered to the government in March.

The institutions in Donegal being examined as part of the investigation include the The Castle in Newtowncunningham and the Stranorlar County Home.

It comes as cabinet Ministers approved a 12 month extension for the Commission of Investigation into the homes to complete its work.

The Commission also now intends to conduct geophysical surveys this week on the burial grounds at the Sean Ross Abbey site in Co. Tipperary following new information.

Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone says the extension has been given because it’s a complex investigation.
