Call for Credit Unions to fund provision of much-needed social housing

A Sligo-based director of the Irish League of Credit Unions says there is now no reason why ten billion euro of credit union assets should not be used to help provide social housing.

Seamus Kilgannon, who’s also a Fianna Fail councillor, says the use of credit union funds for this purpose has been discussed for years but there has been no progress on the issue.

He says some time ago, the Central Bank was being blamed for holding up such a move but this is now no longer the case.
