Forestry now ‘threatening the existence’ of rural communities in Leitrim

The negative impact of afforestation is threatening the very existence of many rural areas in County Leitrim.

That’s the view of Save Leitrim Committee, which held a meeting last night to discuss the increasing amount of forestry being planted in the county.

The Save Leitrim group will hold a public meeting in Manorhamilton tonight, which follows last night’s well attended gathering in Drumshanbo and in Ballinamore on Tuesday.

Speaking to Ocean FM news at last night’s meeting, Sean McLoughlin explained that with 20% of the County Leitrim already covered by forestry, the very existence of local communities are under threat.
