A top Garda officer in the region has confirmed that recent major drugs seizures elsewhere were destined for the north west.
Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken told a meeting of the County Sligo Joint Policing Committee that not only was this the case but that the drugs hauls were also paid for by criminal groups based in the north west.
Speaking to Ocean FM News, he said the gardai will continue to clamp down on this multi-million euro activity.
Chief Superintendent Glacken also said that one of the challenges they face is intimidation of people who are in debt because of drugs.
He vowed that the gardai will deal with those who are holding others to ransom.
