Sligo gardai hope to have new cells in which to hold prisoners at their station in Sligo town by the middle of this year.
The new so-called new ‘custody suite’ is part of renovations currently taking place in the station.
These include new locker and shower facilities that have just been completed and a public office.
Since October 2016, Sligo gardai have had to bring people they detain to Ballymote Garda Station because of the lack of holding facilities in Sligo, a practice that is a drain on both resources and garda time.
Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken says the situation in Sligo Garda Station building is a legacy from bygone times.
