Sligo lose Connacht FBD Semi Final

New Sligo captain Niall Murphy scored an impressive 1-08 but that wasn’t enough to prevent the Yeats County from losing Sunday’s Connacht FBD semi-final to Roscommon at Dr Hyde park by a 2-18 to 1-16.

Roscommon started brightest and led 1-03 to 0-01 in the early stages but the Yeats county battled back with new captain Niall Murphy to the fore striking 1-06 including a penalty to give Sligo a lead of 1-10 to 1-06 at half time.

An experienced Roscommon aided by a strong breeze took hold of the game in the opening exchanges of the 2nd half reeling off 1-04 without reply. Paul Taylor’s young Sligo side responded well and scores from impressive debutant Luke Towey, Pat Hughes and Murphy had them level entering the closing stages.

That was as close as they got though as a late scoring burst seen them pull away and set up a final meeting with Galway next weekend.

Sligo’s attention will now turn to their opening Division 3 League game away to Carlow in two weeks time.
