Donegal TD says ‘Government arrogance and ineptitude’ cause for nurses and midwives strike

A Sinn Fein Donegal TD has blamed what he describes as ‘Government arrogance and ineptitude’ for nurses and midwives going on strike.

The Irish and Nurses and Midwives organisation has announced that a 24-hour work stoppage will take place at Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals on January 30th over low wages and retention issues.

If the dispute is not resolved, there will be further 24-hour strikes on the 5th and 7th of February, and then on the 12th, 13th and 14th of February.

Deputy Pearse Doherty says nurses were forced to take this action as the government has failed to address the recruitment and retention crisis within the health service.
