Almost 330 elderly people in the north west waiting for homecare funding

Almost 330 elderly people across the north west are waiting for homecare funding.

Figures reveal that Donegal has the greatest number of people waiting on the service.

Donegal has the highest number of elderly on the waiting list for homecare funding, with 225 people awaiting the vital service.

A total of 104 people in Sligo and Leitrim combined were waiting for funding for new or additional home support services at the end of October.

Nationally this figure stands at more than 6,000.

The scale of the waiting lists was revealed in response to a parliamentary question by Fianna Fáil’s health spokesperson Stephen Donnelly.

According to the Irish Independent, while waiting lists are managed locally, the HSE was not able to provide information on how long people were waiting for funding as this is not collated nationally.

The HSE says those people who are on the waiting lists are reviewed, as funding becomes available, to ensure that individual cases continue to be dealt with on a priority basis within the available resources
