42% increase in those waiting on beds at Sligo University Hospital

There has been a 42% increase in the number of people who went without a hospital bed at Sligo University Hospital in 2018.

Figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show 4,183 people were forced to wait on trolleys compared to 2,406 in 2017.

This figure is five times the number recorded at the hospital in 2006 when records began.

Meanwhile there has been a 6% increase in those waiting on beds at Letterkenny University Hospital over the last year where 5,174 patients went without a bed.

Industrial Relations Office for the North West, Maura Hickey says the figures don’t come as a shock.
