Dates set for north Sligo Fine Gael selection conventions

Fine Gael has provisionally set dates for the holding of conventions to select its local election candidates in the north Sligo area for next year’s elections.

The Sligo/Strandhill convention is to take place on January 21st with the Sligo/Drumcliff convention due for February 4th.

However, these dates have yet to be rubber-stamped by Fine Gael headquarters.

Sligo/Drumcliffe and Sligo/Strandhill form the Sligo Municipal District, which covers a wide area stretching from Ballisodare all the way to Bunduff Bridge in north Sligo, taking in Sligo town, Strandhill, Rosses Point and up as far as Cliffoney.

Those seeking nominations to run as Fine Gael candidates include outgoing councillors Hubert Keaney and Sinead Maguire, as well as Thomas Walsh from Ballygawley and Blaine Gaffney, who’s parliamentary assistant for Deputy Tony McLoughlin.

A number of other names are also being mentioned, including a relation of a sitting politician and, possibly a former councillor.
