Outrage over debt collectors seeking payment from cancer patients

A local cancer survivor says she was horrified to hear on the news this morning that debt collection agencies are threatening some patients with legal action if they don’t pay bills for their hospital treatment.

It involves people who don’t have a medical card or health insurance.

The Irish Cancer Society is now calling on the HSE to immediately stop referring cancer patients’ debt to collection agencies.

Sligo cancer survivor Caitriona McGoldrick gave her reaction to Ocean FM News on hearing what was happening.

Chief Executive of the Irish Cancer Society Averil Power says patients are also told they will be publicly named and shamed.
