Sinn Fein leader speaks of her admiration for Countess Markievicz

The Sinn Fein leader has spoken of her admiration for Constance Countess Markievicz as a politician and role model for women.

Mary Lou McDonald made her comments at Lissadell House in Sligo last evening, the childhood home of Countess Markievicz.

She was the guest speaker at a Sinn Fein-organised event to mark the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage and the 100th anniversary of the election of Countess Markievicz to the House of Commons.

Deputy McDonald said if she were involved in politics today, she’d be a republican and a rebel.
