Councillor suggests asking neighbouring councils to help fund south Donegal fire stations

A south Donegal councillor is suggesting that local authorities in Sligo, Leitrim and Fermanagh might be asked to contribute toward the building of two new fire stations, one in Bundoran, the other in Ballyshannon.

Fine Gael Councillor Barry O Neill says the fire service in Bundoran provides services to northern parts of Sligo and Leitrim while Ballyshannon occasionally supports the fire service in Belleek.

Donegal councillors are opposed to a proposal to amalgamate the Ballyshannon and Bundoran fire stations into one, despite them being only about four miles apart.

But if two new stations are to be built, Cllr O Neill says there needs to be a funding package in place to put to the Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, Damien English, during an expected to visit Ballyshannon in the coming weeks.
