Sligo woman is world’s longest-living lung transplant survivor

A woman who was once given days to live is celebrating being the world’s longest living survivor of a lung transplant.

Vera Dwyer from Keash, in South Sligo, travelled to the UK thirty years ago for the procedure as it wasn’t available in Ireland at the time.

The 77 year old great-grandmother has been awarded a gold medal by the Irish Heart and Lung Transplant Association for her achievement.

Vera says she feels incredibly lucky to have defied the odds.
