‘No reason why factories should not pay more for beef cattle’

Chairperson of the ICMSA’s Livestock Committee, Enniscrone farmer Des Morrisson, says Sligo farmers are absolutely entitled to expect a fourth quarter surge in their beef price.

A recognised beef expert, Mr Morrisson said that conditions, prices and patterns practically exactly mirrored those that applied last year when, according to the ICMSA,  steer and heifer prices roses week on week over the same period by 30c per kg at the year’s end.

He said that figures for the UK market were positive and while the figures are up on last year, there was absolutely no reason why factories were continuing to pay the current unjustifiably low prices unless they had made a conscious decision to do so.
