Sligo Councillors consider following Leitrim’s lead in banning ‘Roundup’ weedkiller



Another county council in the region is considering banning the use of the weedkiller Roundup in public areas.

That’s because it contains the substance glyphosate, which some claim is a contributing cause to cancer.

Leitrim County Council has already imposed a ban.

Sligo Fianna Fail Councillor Rosaleen O Grady called for the ban at this week’s meeting of the county council.

But council officials pointed out there was no other alternative weedkiller that was as effective, and that trials and investigations on the substance were ongoing.

Although Sligo councillors agreed to defer imposing any ban for now, Cllr O Grady said it was an extremely serious issue that she wanted kept on the agenda:
