Confusion, uncertainty over future of Maugherow post office services

Confusion reigns this evening over the future of post office services in a north Sligo community.

It appears that at least one effort to retain post office services in the Maugherow area has been unsuccessful.

It’s as a result of an email response today to a submission some time ago from Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas Healy.

In that email, An Post says an independent assessor has decided that the recent decision to close Ballinfull Post Office was properly made and in accordance with provisions concerning population and distances.

However, Ocean FM News understands a similar email was sent to others who sent a submission to the independent assessor — which leaves the local Maugherow community campaign unsure what the situation is now in relation to their submission.

A campaign spokesman said this evening they are currently considering the situation, particularly in view of the fact they sent in their submission only a few days ago.

Cllr Healy spoke to Ocean FM’s Harry Keaney a few minutes ago and outlined his understanding of the up to date situation:

However, Sligo/Leitrim Fianna Fail Deputy Marc MacSharry says he believes post office services in Maugherow will not be retained.

And he says that’s a decision that will shock many in the area, particularly considering the short time since the local community sent in their submission.
