Fire Services confirm today’s fire started on first floor of popular Sligo pub

No one was injured in a major fire that broke out at McGarrigle’s pub on O’Connell Street today.

However, the fire services have confirmed the blaze caused significant damage to the first floor of the pub and also crept into neighbouring properties.

Full report:

Smoke was seen billowing from the top of McGarrigles pub on O’Connell street just before lunchtime today.

The emergency services including the Sligo and Ballymote Fire Brigade units rushed to the scene within minutues.

Tesco had to be evacuated as did a number of other businesses in the nearby area.

David Murtagh works in Mullaney’s Travel nearby – he described the situation to Ocean FM News as it happened just before lunchtime today:

The fire was brought under control and noone was injured as a result of the blaze.

But Chief Fire Officer Gerry O’Malley confirmed to Ocean FM News this afternoon that the blaze was significant when they arrived.

He says the exact cause of the blaze is unknown and investigations will now continue by the Gardai.

He says their immediate concern and task was to ensure there was noone caught up in the fire which he says thankfully there wasn’t.

He outlined to me earlier exactly what happened:

The Gardai have confirmed that O’Connell street has reopened this evening to both traffic and pedestrians.
