Top Sligo-born hotelier defends VAT rate



The Sligo-born CEO of the largest hotel operator in Ireland is defending the 9% VAT rate for businesses which provide accommodation, such as hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts.

Following a Department of Finance report, it’s believed the government in the coming budget may increase the special 9% VAT rate for the sector to the full 13.5%.

Dalata hotel group CEO Pat McCann, is a native of Bunninadden, Co Sligo, who began his carrer as a hall porter with the Yeats Country Hotel in Rosses Point.

He says the current VAT rate has benefitted everyone.
