Advocates for abuse victims want more than words from Pope Francis



Local advocates for abuse victims say they are not satisfied with how Pope Francis dealt with the ongoing scandals in the Catholic church during his visit to Ireland.

That’a despite the pope telling tens of thousands of people in Knock yesterday that the issue was ‘an open wound’ requiring firm and decisive action in the pursuit of justice and truth.

Even as the pope was speaking in Knock yesterday, new allegations in relation to sexual abuse in the Catholic church were emerging – – – this time in the United States.

There, the Vatican’s ambassador to the U.S. accused the Pope of promoting the former Archbishop of Washington Cardinal Theodre McCarrick despite allegations of sexual abuse against him.

It was something on the minds of these people who took part in a demonstration outside the Town Hall in Sligo yesterday afternoon, at the same time as the pope was starting Mass in the Phoenix Park in Dublin:

In Knock yesterday, the Pope prayed for truth and justice to emerge, for the healing of victims, and that such abuse never happens again:
