Donegal ranks in top ten in the country for visitor numbers

Over 800,000 domestic visitors came to the Northwest last year, spending €179m.

The figures for Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal have been released by the CSO for 2017.

Domestic tourism accounts for the most spend in the North West counties in terms of the tourism product,

Donegal recorded the highest number of domestic visitors coming to the county on their holdidays last year at over 370,000 people followed by Sligo which recorded nearly a quarter of a million people. They spent €50m.

Just over 200,000 people came to county Leitrim spending spending €32m.

Donegal has a strong tourism product attracting good numbers and ranking in the top ten in Ireland in both domestic and international tourism numbers.

But the figures show that Sligo and Leitrim are holding their own but when compared to the likes of Dublin, Cork, Kerry and Galway, they are still lagging well behind.

Leitrim ranks outside the top twenty for visitors and has the second lowest number of overseas visitors in the country after Longford.
