Stiefel Fallout: Chamber to continue to lobby government on investment

The head of the Chamber of Commerce in Sligo says workers affected by the closure of GSK’s operation in Sligo should be able to access new positions being created in the county.

Yesterday GSK Ireland which runs Stiefel Labs in the Finisklin Industrial estate announced it’s to close.

The company is the close its operation on a phased basis over the next three years with the loss of 165 jobs.

The operation is set to close at the end of 2021.

CEO of the Chamber of Commerce in Sligo Aidan Doyle says it’s disappointing news for the region.

But he’s hoping that recent jobs announcement at new companies setting up in Sligo might be another option for workers:

He says the reasons for the closure are more to do with global market conditions.

He says the Chamber will continue to lobby government with the aim of creating even more jobs in the North West in the future.
