Good turnout expected at weekend post-office protest in Sligo

A major rally in opposition to the closure of post offices in this region is planned in Sligo on Saturday.

The protest will see a number of speakers not just from Sligo but also from Donegal and further afield voice their views on the importance of the local post office.

The rally is expected to start on Connaughton road at lunchtime on Saturday and make its way down to the GPO in Sligo where speeches will be held.

It follows the announcement in recent weeks that 21 post offices in the North West region could close.

Local communities have already shown their opposition to the move with over a thousand people turning out to public meetings in Gurteen, Ballinfull and Dunkineely last week.

Donegal campaigners and those in Leitrim are also expected to support Saturday’s event.

One of the organisers Sligo Sinn Fein Cllr Thomas Healy says it will be a cross party event.

Further details and speakers will be confirmed later in the week.
