Efforts ongoing to fill consultant posts at Sligo hospital

Three of six vacant consultant posts at Sligo University Hospital are currently filled on a temporary basis.

However, efforts are being made to fill them permanently.

Sligo Sinn Fein Councillors Chris MacManus says he received figures from the HSE showing that there were six vacant consultant posts in Sligo University Hospital.

He says Sligo University Hospital has the second highest of consultant vacancies withint the Saolta Hospital Group after Galway University Hospital.

In response to a query from Ocean FM News, the Saolta University Healthcare Group has given an update on the situation.

It says that in radiology, one vacancy has been filled on a temporary basis since last month and there will be interviews for a permanent post in September.

In dermatology, a post has been filled on a half-time basis by a temporary consultant. There has been no applicant for a permanent post.

A vacancy in microbiology has been filled on a temporary basis since April last and interviews for a permanent post have been completed and a job offered.

In pathology, the appointment of a permanent applicant is near completion and the person is expected to take up the post in the fourth quarter of this year.
