Work expected to start on new hospital unit in Ballyshannon early next year

Contractors for work on the next phase of work at the Sheil Hospital in Ballyshannon are expected to be chosen by the end of this year.

It’s envisaged building work on the new €19m, 80-bed community hospital will start early next year.

It will provide accommodation for residents and patients of the Sheil Hospital and Rock Nursing Unit.

The HSE is currently seeking main, mechanical and electrical contractors to do the work involved.

It will also be looking for submissions from building providers for temporary accommodation to facilitate the existing residents and patients during construction.

This temporary residential accommodation will be provided on the grounds of the Rock Nursing Unit.

The new 80 bed unit will consist of 66 single bedrooms and 7 twin bedrooms in a combination of long stay, short stay and dementia wards.

The project also includes the upgrade of the existing Sheil building to accommodate a day hospital.

It is envisaged that the new unit will be complete and ready for occupation by late 2020.
