A member of Donegal’s Joint Policing Committee says he will resign from the committee if the opening hours of Donegal Town Garda Station are reduced.
Lawrence McManus says the station should continue to remain open on a 24-hour basis, insisting that Donegal Town is busy because of the number of tourists visiting and an increasing workforce in the area.
Although no decision has yet been made on opening hours, sources told Ocean FM News it does not mean the station is being closed or downgraded but that better use would be made of personnel and resources.
Also, a contract for a complete renovation of the station is expected to be signed later this year, with work to start possibly before Christmas.
But Mr McManus says he will not accept any reduction in opening hours and is prepared to go to the Minister for Justice over the issue if necessary:
