Council hears plans for a new water safety centre at Rosses Point

A half-million euro new water safety and training centre is being proposed for Rosses Point in County Sligo.

The Sligo branch of Irish Water Safety is putting forward the idea.

Details of the proposed centre were given to councillors for the Sligo Municipal District at their meeting in Sligo Town Hall yesterday by Sligo Water Safety offcials Daniel McGarrigle, a former councillor, and John McShane, sports officer with Sligo Water Safety.

They told councillors the estimated cost of the project was €480,000 and that it would help increase the range and scale of activities available in the area.

It would include a fit-for-purpose training and storage area, and provide modern amenities, such as showers for visitors.

It would also increase water safety training for groups such as life guards and surfers, and be a water safety awareness and promotion point.

It would be used not only by Sligo Water Safety but others involved in water activities.

A unit would be available for lease, which would provide a revenue stream for the centre.

Council CEO Ciaran Hayes welcomed the proposal in principle, adding that they had to deal with issues such as funding, planning and how the proposed centre would be managed and maintained.

John McShane has been telling Ocean FM News how the new centre would help promote water safety in the area:
