Letterkenny Athletic Club Notes

A large number of Letterkenny AC runners competed in Friday evening’s Rathmullen Festival 5K. Ann Marie McGlynn had a superb run and her time of 16.16 gave her first place in the women’s race and 5th place overall. Just 1 second behind Ann Marie was the highly consistent Ivan Toner, who was also 2nd in the M40 category that was won by Finn Valley AC’s Dermot McElchar. The overall race winner was City of Derry Spartans’ Conor Bradley in a very fast time of 14.54.
Liam Doherty was the next M40 runner in 17.03. Barry Mackey continued his incredibly successful summer and achieved yet another PB. He took another 6 seconds off the PB he had set just 7 days earlier in the JG Memorial 5K in Cranford. Barry’s hard work is now paying massive dividends and he is now only 1 second/KM away from his first sub 18 minute 5K. Barry was the leading 5K runner.
Paul Toner finished in 18.37. Shauna McGeehan was the 2nd woman in 18.46. Richard Raymond produced another good performance and he was 2nd in the M60 category in a time of 21.52.
Hugh Gallagher ran 34.04 in the Tireragh AC 4 mile race in Skreen, west Co Sligo. This race was also held on Friday evening and was won by Sligo AC’s Shane Hayes in 21.41.
Catriona Jennings was the winner of the women’s race in Saturday’s ‘Irish Runner’ 10 mile race in Dublin.  She crossed the line in 61.21 in a race that featured a high quality field.
Darren McBrearty’s excellent track season continued on Saturday. He was 3rd in a time of 1.52.79 in the 800m race at the  GV Ryan/Irish Milers Club meeting in Irishtown. The winner was Tullamore Harriers’ Mark Milner in 1.52.24.
In Saturday’s Letterkenny parkrun, Martin Gormley and Liam Ferry were, for the second consecutive week, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Martin’s time of 19.28 was 33 seconds faster than 7 days earlier and was the fastest of his 20 Letterkenny parkruns to date. Martin was the first M50 runner. Liam’s time was 20.25. James McBride, running the event for the 33rd time, was once again the leading M65 runner, in 24.06. Cathal Roarty was the 2nd M50 runner in 24.34. The first runner across the line was Conor Brennan, who was running the event for the first time. His time was 19.03.
LAC’s annual Danny McDaid 15K race will take place at 11.30am on Sunday July 29th. The entry fee is €15 and registration, as well as changing, presentation and refreshments, will take place at Aura Leisure Centre. There will be an excellent quality Technical ‘T’ shirt for all competitors and there is a generous prize list. The club is grateful to the Station House Hotel who, once again, are the main sponsor.
Letterkenny Athletic Club would like to offer congratulaions and best wishes to club member Marie Boyle and her husband Gary. Marie and Gary were married recently.
