In west Sligo, stolen chalice recovered on shore near Easkey

The chalice that was stolen from a church in west Sligo has been recovered.

The theft occurred at The Star of The Sea Church, in Rathlee, during the early hours of yesteday morning.

The burglary took place between 1am and 4am.

A rear door was forced and the chalice, and cash, were taken.

However, a few hours later a safe containing the chalice was found about five kilometres away, on the shore near Easkey.

Efforts had been made to burn the safe, which caused damage to it and the chalice.

However, the thieves took some cash after opening the safe, leaving the chalice behind.

A holiday home in the Easkey/Dromore West area was also broken into and two televisions taken.

Also, a break-in occurred at a business in West Sligo during which cigarettes, cash and charity boxes amounting to a total of about eight or nine thousand euro were taken.

That burglary also occurred during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardai are asking anyone with information to contact them.
