TD unhappy about new restrictions on learner drivers

A Independent TD is insisting that a learner driver caught without a qualified driver should not be put off the road if that learner cannot be guaranteed a test within six weeks.

It’s one of two elements of the Road Traffic Bill passed in the Dail on Friday.

The change proposed by the Bill would allow for the owner of the vehicle to face prosecution and fines of up to €2,000 while the vehicle may also be seized by gardaí.

The measures will apply to all vehicles, including private cars and agricultural vehicles.

Independent Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice has already tried to change the proposed legislation by introducing an amendment earlier — but that was defeated.

But he says its unfair for the State to confiscate a car driven by a learner if the State cannot provide enough testers.
