‘If only I could have been born ‘not gay”: Noel Cunningham says change of attitude has to start in the home

Donegal personality Noel Cunningham says Ireland still has a long way to go to address what he calls ‘an inherent’ homophobia in our culture.

Mr. Cunningham welcomes the progress we have made with the recent gay marriage referendum and the apology this week by the government for criminalising people who engaged in homosexual acts in the past.

Mr. Cunningham who has openly spoken about being gay says to this day ‘if only I could have been born not gay I would have chosen that’.

Speaking on North West today, he said that what’s more he hopes that none of his younger family members like nieces or nephews are gay because he says it will make their young lives more difficult even in the Ireland of today.
