Donegal County Council says programme does not reflect all its efforts to tackle waste issues

Donegal County Council says that an RTE Investigates programme does not reflect all of the efforts its making to address waste management issues in the county.

The report on waste managment right across the country is to be aired tonight on RTE one.

It found that Donegal is the poorest performing council in Ireland for its inspection rate of its facilities and for its investment in waste services.

The investigation also found that in 2016, Donegal had just two members of staff to regulate 44 waste permits in its area.

However, the council says RTE’s analysis does not reflect all of its efforts.

The council added that it had secured funding to hire extra staff and says it’s committed to addressing waste management issues.

Donegal Independent Councillor Tom Conaghan says the poor findings in Donegal come as a surprise to him:

Leitrim and Sligo ranked in the top ten performing Councils but Leitrim did not prosecute any waste offenders between 2014 and 2016 while Sligo made 172 prosecutions.

The programme will be broadcast on RTE One Television tonight at 9:35.
