Local plebiscite on changing spelling on Enniscrone expected in September

The people of the West Sligo coastal village of Enniscrone may be going to the polls on September 20th.

That’s the date Sligo councillors set yesterday for a local plebiscite to be held on changing the spelling of the name of Enniscrone.

The official name of the village — such as is on road signs — begins with an ‘i’ but there’s a campaign to change it to an ‘E’, which most local people use.

Sligo County Council Director of Services Dorothy Clarke told yesterday’s meeting that the electoral roll — that’s the list of people entitled to vote — will have to come back before the council and it’s hoped to have that available at the September council meeting.

And although the September 20th plebiscite date might have to be reviewed, local people who attended yesterday’s meeting are delighted that progress is finally being made, as Mureadach Tuffy told Ocean FM News:
