Famed Sligo-born banker Bill Burke dies in New York



The death has occurred in New York of Sligo native Bill Burke, one of the most prominent bankers in the city for decades and a former grand marshal of the New York St Patrick’s Day parade.

A native of Tubbercurry, he was aged 76.

He became a vicepresident of Barclays Bank, later becoming becoming senior vice president of Bank of Ireland, based in its prestigious Manhattan office on Fifth Avenue.

When Bank of Ireland scaled down its retail activities in the US, Burke joined forces with Cork native Joe Murphy to set up a new bank, Country Bank.
