Former leader in Irish fishing industry, Joey Murrin has died



Joey Murrin, one of the leading figures in the Irish fishing industry has died.

Mr Murrin was 82 and passed peacefully at Killybegs Community Hospital.

He was born and raised in Killybegs and spent most of his young life as a deckhand before becoming Chairman of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Association in 1973 and remained in that position until 2000.

He was later appointed as Chairman of Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

Joey was also heavily involved in politics once running for Fine Gael in the European Election in the late 80’s but while he was unsuccessful, he continued to be a strong voice for fishermen.
