Abortion legislation: MacSharry says there’s no rift with leader, no split in party



A Sligo/Leitrim TD has strongly refuted suggestions that there is rift between him and his party leader over forthcoming legislation on abortion.

Deputy Marc MacSharry also says it’s incorrect to suggest there’s a major split within the party on the issue.

He was speaking after an Irish Times report said a parliamentary party meeting yesterday evening ended abruptly, with some members reacting to suggestions that a whip be imposed when it comes to voting on the abortion legislation.

Mr MacSharry was quoted as saying there needed to be ‘shared ownership’ of Fianna Fail and not a diktat issued by a ‘small number of people.’
