Aodh Ruadh GAA Club Notes

Club meeting

There is a club executive committee meeting this Thursday at 8.30pm in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. All committee members are asked to attend.

Football

There was a strong Aodh Ruadh contribution in Celtic Park as Donegal under 20s tore apart Cavan on a scoreline of 2-21 to 0-10 in their Ulster preliminary round game. A Nathan Boyle goal five minutes from half-time helped the Tir Chonaill men to a massive half-time lead. Shane McGrath lined out at corner forward and was on target with two points. Oisin Rooney is also part of the panel with Brian Roper contributing his not inconsiderable knowledge in the back room team. Good luck to the lads as they prepare for the Ulster quarter-finals this Sunday where they will face Derry in Omagh. Congratulations also to their senior counterparts who dismantled a sorry Derry outfit on Sunday 2-16 to 0-16 to cruise into the Ulster semi-final. That last four clash will take place on Sunday, June 10th in Clones at 4pm with Down supplying the opposition. Those who wish to show their support for the county are invited to get an official Donegal GAA supporters car sticker from Pearse O’Neill’s. These are priced €20 with all proceeds going to the running of county teams.

It is back to domestic fare this Sunday when Glenswilly are the visitors to Father Tierney Park. The reserve game gets matters under way at 1.30pm and is followed by the seniors at 3pm.

Minor training commences on Friday at 5pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh [Munday’s ]. This is the first session of the new season and a blank slate so all players eligible for minor football are warmly invited to attend.

The Aodh Ruadh under 14s extend their sincere thanks to the Clearys and the Abbey Garage and all the parents, players and punters who contributed to Saturday’s car wash fund-raiser. Training continues on Wednesday from 4.45pm to 6pm. There will be no training this Friday.

The under 12s took on Naomh Columba on Friday evening, but came up short against a strong visiting contingent. Glen had built up a sizeable cushion by the break. However the Ernesiders showed great character over the second half to reel them in and leave five points between the sides at full time. Liam Doogan was man of the match for the homesters, standing tall in an over-worked defence. Tommy Clyne worked hard in midfield while the talented Barry Campbell shone up front. The team are at home to Dungloe this Friday. Players are to be up at park for 5.45pm with throw-in at 6.30pm. Then on Saturday the team travel to St Mary’s, Sligo for an under 12 tournament. Times will be confirmed over the course of the week.

Saturday saw Aodh Ruadh under 10s hosting their counterparts from Ardara. Ballyshannon fielded three teams of nine with the sides captained by Thomas Keown, Sam Davitt and Cole Connolly. There were three competitive games played with the Ballyshannon lads giving a good account of themselves in all three matches. The under 10 and under 8 squads are away to St Mary’s, Sligo on Wednesday evening. Players are asked to be at the St Mary’s grounds for 6.30pm. The under 10s will be on the road again on Bank Holiday Monday when they travel to Ardara for the Joe Larry tournament. Further details on the arrangements for that competition will be supplied over the course of the week. Also, a date for the diary. The Mick Shannon Tournament will take place on Saturday 23rd June. Under 10 training continues on Wednesdays at 5.45pm and Fridays at 7.15pm.

Under 8 training continues on Thursdays from 6.15pm until 7.15pm. Under 6 training continues on Fridays from 6pm to 6.45pm at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Ladies

The under 16s have training this Wednesday at 7.30pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

There will be no under 14 training this Tuesday due to exams. The girls have a game on Thursday away to Devenish. Players are to be meet at the Park at 6pm to arrange lifts. Throw in at Garrison is at 7pm.

The first is home against Glencar / Manorhamilton at 3pm on Saturday. The second is away to Naomh Molaise Gaels in Grange at 5pm on Monday. Well done to all the under 12 girls who participated in the Community Games Finals this week. What a brilliant achievement to make the National Finals.

The Aodh Ruadh under 10s travelled to Bundoran last Saturday. Ballyshannon fielded 16 players and played three games, winning two in an impressive display against a physically imposing Bundoran selection. Ciara Larkin and Niamh Duffy were both excellent around the centre of the park while Cadhla Gillespie rattled in three goals as she marked herself out as a bright prospect for the future. The under 10 and under 8 girls have a home blitz on Monday 4th June at 11am. Players are to be up for 10.30am with games getting under way at 11am. We will have a large number of visiting teams taking part on the day so we need a good spread of food for the post tournament refreshments. Parents / guardians are asked to provide a loaf of sandwiches, tray of buns or similar. Help will also needed with catering upstairs in Aras and parents / guardians are asked to please lend a hand. Under 10 girls training continues at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh this Tuesday from 7.15pm to 8.15pm.

Under 8 and under 6 training continues on Tuesday at 6pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

It was a great Sunday for our club players lining out with the county in their respective Ulster finals. Eilish Gallagher and Sarah Jane Keon played their part as Donegal defeated Down 5-17 to 1-5 in the Ulster A final. Meanwhile Aodh Ruadh had heavy representation on the Donegal’s side which won the Ulster under 14 C title against Tyrone on a scoreline of 3-11 to 2-9. Áine Hill was in goal with Lucy McGlynn anchoring the defence at number six. Caoimhe Hughes O’Brien steered the midfield while Aoibhinn McGarrigle tortured the Red Hands from wing forward. Katie O’Brien was also part of the panel.

Well done to our under 16 and under 14 players on their success at the Community Games National Finals in Limerick last weekend. Cora Rooney won gold in the 50 metre butterfly. Niamh Hughes won a fourth place medal in the 50 metre freestyle. The under 16 relay team of Clodagh O’Connor, Anna McCaffrey, Cora Rooney, Katie McMullin, Niamh Hughes and Caoimhe McCauley won national gold in an outstanding swim. Congratulations also to Catherine Browne and her quiz team who performed well in Limerick.

Hurling

The under 14s took on Saint Eunan’s in the A league final last Thursday. The lads were determined to keep their unbeaten run going and claim their first silverware of the season. Saint Eunan’s put up a good battling performance, but overall the Ballyshannon lads were much too strong for them. Aodh Ruadh’s ability to hit the net when needed was the difference as they ran out comfortable winners 7-12 to 2-11. It was a delighted winning captain Danny Breen Brosnan who accepted the trophy, Aodh Ruadh’s first silverware of 2018, from Marc Brown. Well done to all the parents who gave the lads great support during the game and provided refreshments for both teams afterwards.

There were two very special guests in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh on Thursday last as the Liam MacCarthy and Irish Press Cup visited the club. Many thanks to Karen Summerville for all her help with this visit.

Well done to Danny Breen Brosnan, Aaron Neilan, Ryan Keenaghan and Kyle McNulty who were part of the Donegal under 14 Development squad who took part in a blitz in Garvaghey on Saturday. The lads did very well, winning against Tyrone and Monaghan before losing narrowly to St Gall’s of Belfast. Well done also to Denis Daly who is part of the management of this squad.

Training for all age groups on Sunday at 12 noon. All are welcome from 5 years upwards. For any information contact John Rooney on 086-2587793.
