Dublin councillor proposes statue of Countess Markievicz on O’Connell Street

Countess Markievicz may be about to score another first, this time more than 90 years after her death.

If a proposal by a Dublin city councillor is adopted next month, she will become the first woman to be commemorated by a statue on O’Connell Street in Dublin.

It would be particularly appropriate given her involvement in the 1916 Rising which was centered on the nearby GPO.

The motion proposing to erect the statue is being proposed by Independent Councillor Vincent Jackson.
