Adults with cancer unlikely to be automatically entitled to a medical card



Adults diagnosed with cancer are unlikely to be automatically entitled to a medical card, judging by a response from the Taoiseach to a Sligo/Leitrim TD in the Dail.

Recently, the HSE decided to not automatically give medical cards to adults diagnosed with the disease.

Sligo/Leitrim TD Eamon Scanlon pleaded yesterday with Mr Varadkar to restore what had been an automatic entitlement for cancer patients.

Deputy Scanlon said there was not only the enormous stress for patients and their families on receiving a cancer diagnosis but also the cost of medicine and care.

However, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s response seemed to rule out the return of the automatic entitlement.
